LWB or SWB?

Many people ask us whether they should choose a LWB (long-wheelbase) or SWB (short-wheelbase) campervan.

What's the difference?

The actual difference is that the LWB is 40cm longer than the SWB. You can see the difference between the rear of the sliding door and the rear wheel arch.

What are the pros and cons?

Clearly, with a longer van, this gives you a larger space inside. 40cm doesn't sound like much, but it's extra storage cupboards, extra space for changing and generally makes the living area feel much bigger inside.

You won't notice much difference when driving, but the LWB will need a bit of extra care when going round tight corners and manoeuvering in tight spaces. You will of course stick out a bit in your local supermarket car park, and many roadside spaces will not accommodate the extra length. You may also be charged extra for certain ferry crossings. You eill also need to have a bit more space on your driveway!

The other factor which is sometimes not discussed is that the LWB comes with a price uplift. This can be anything up to £5k more, depending on the vehicle. This is due to increased conversion costs, increased vehicle cost, and the lack of available vehicles.

LWB PROS

- More living space

- More storage

- Good resale

LWB CONS

- Additional cost

- Extra length harder to find parking

- Extra care when driving
